The Carnivalesque
One of the highlights of Egyptian and Turkish urban spaces in city tourism is the souq - the bazaar. In the hustle and bustle of modern city life, Egypt and Turkey continue to incorporate these traditional market places with all their paradoxical carnivalesque themes of chaos and order. Surprisingly, bringing the most unlikely of social statuses, religious and political affiliations, and sexual orientations together, in spaces that deliberately maintain an orientalist aesthetic to serve the cities allure and touristic picturesque ambitions. This is the carnivalesque, a perfect kind of mess.
